Total Recall Dog Training

I’m Pippa Mattinson, a writer, and British trainer of hunting dogs. I am the author of the original Total Recall dog training program published by Quiller Books in 2012.

I wrote Total Recall to help the large numbers of people that struggle to get their dogs to obey them outdoors, when there are exciting distractions around them.

Total Recall has now sold hundreds of thousands of copies all around the world and has been translated into many different languages.

It’s still as relevant to dog training today as it was when it was first published. And for many people this simple and inexpensive solution will be all they need to get their dog’s recall back on track.

How Total Recall Began

Some years ago I ran a free phone-in helpline for people who owned sporting breeds of dog such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Spaniels, and GSPs, Breeds that had originally been bred for hunting and retrieving but were now mostly kept as pets or companions.

The purpose of the helpline was to provide information for people interested in hunting dog training. But the helpline was soon swamped with calls from people who couldn’t get their dogs to come back when they called them. Not just hunting dog owners, but pet dog owners too.

I wrote the Total Recall dog training program for those people and if you would like to have a dog with a really reliable recall, then it might be a book you would find helpful too

What Can Total Recall Do?

Dog training is not cheap. My aim with Total Recall was to provide an affordable solution to the single most common and potentially dangerous problem facing dog owners today.

It’s the system I use to teach my own hunting dogs to recall over long distances in extremely distracting environments. It can be used to teach recall to brand new puppies, and to fix recall issues in older dogs too.

Total Recall is not a general obedience program in that it does not cover sit/stays, or loose leash walking in great detail. But it teaches you all the elements of effective modern dog training.

So if you complete the program set out in the book, you will have the tools and knowledge to train those other skills yourself!

What’s Inside Total Recall

The book is divided into three parts:

  1. Preparation: all the information you’ll ever need in order to prepare and support yourself and your dog as you work through the training programme, including information on how your dog learns, practical training with rewards and beyond training.
  2. A detailed Recall Training Programme complete with exercises to work through. In other words, the ‘how to’ section of the book where you’ll learn puppy recall; pre-recall for older dogs; basic recall; on location training and ultimately recall for life.
  3. The problem solving section, where you can discover why you got into difficulties in the past and learn how to avoid making the same mistakes again in the future.

”The book’s strength lies in clear, engaging writing and, in particular, in its structured exercises designed to build a recall from scratch” Dogs Today
